What are your favorite flowers to receive in a bouquet or see in a garden?

White Dogwood...yard

Daffodils...yard

Carnations %26amp; Baby's Breath...bouquet. Unbelievable frangrance and beauty of flowers.

What are your favorite flowers to receive in a bouquet or see in a garden?
Callalillies are my favorite flower. Orchids are beatiful also!
Reply:I love receiving pink carnations, they smell so wonderful and they last forever. In a garden--any flower they are all so beautiful especially a big variety. My favorite is probably in May when the lilacs come out....mmmmmm can almost smell them now. : )
Reply:Roses,baby's breath,tulips and lillies.

What is the best way to perserve a roses...a quick way scince they have already begun to turn brown.?

a got the most beautiful half dozen of white roses for my homecoming dance last weekend and i want to save them...its now been a week that i have had them in water and they have started to turn brown so i have to do something quick...any suggestions. the buquette also includes baby's breath and the green fern like things. any help will be much apperciated!!

What is the best way to perserve a roses...a quick way scince they have already begun to turn brown.?
If they are starting to turn brown this is probably the only option you have. Tie a string around the stems - or you can do them individually. Hang upside down in a dry place until completely dry. Handle carefully when they are dry as they will be very fragile.
Reply:I believe now is too late, but I am not expert however, in the future when you get Roses cut the stems in an angle with a sharp utensil, to a vase of water add one teaspoon of sugar mix well and place flowers in it. This trick I learned while stationed in Germany. I have tried it and the flowers last three to four weeks nicely. I do not know if this method works when the flowers are already brown, you have nothing to loose but lots to gain. Good luck.
Reply:You might try spraying them with glycerine.
Reply:strip each stem of all leaves and thorns , put a rubber band on the end of each one separately add an opened paper clip to rubberband hang upside down from a hanger in the closet till dry in a week or 2. but it works best to do this when flowers are at their prettiest, cant hurt to try.

If I rake up ground cover to lay wildflower seeds, will the ground cover grow back?

The ground cover consists of clovers, vines, some purple looking flowers, baby's breath. I do want it to grow back to fill in with the flowers. But I do have to rake it up to lay the seeds right? Or can I just lay the seeds over the ground cover and shake the cover so the seeds fall under? Will that work or do I need to still rake up the cover?

What could cause my Infant's Breath to Smell Like Beer???

Hello. I have an 8-month old who I've noticed the past couple times when I pick him up from daycare that his breath smells like he just had a beer!!!! I've asked the sitter about it and she hasn't ever noticed the smell. He often eats lentil soup - does anyone know whether this could cause his breath to smell like a hoppy beer??? I'm about to go crazy if I think for one minute that the daycare could be giving him beer!!! Has anyone else ever noticed a beer-like smell on their baby's breath???

What could cause my Infant's Breath to Smell Like Beer???
make a doctors appointment for the next time you pick him up and have his blood alcohol levels checked

then i would sue the **** out of her if he is getting beer!!!
Reply:He may thrush... or excess yeast on the tongue and inside of the mouth. It is a common condition for babies and can be treated easily.
Reply:Yeah umm I would start asking lots and lots of questions.
Reply:maybe cereal put in his formula instead of spoon feeding it to him??

or perhaps thrush? but you'd notice trush all the time...

if you can't find the reason I'd take him from the day care to his doctor they could maybe determin the cause or at least try a blood test to check his blood alcohol level..

giving a baby any amount of beer could be deadly!!
Reply:Awful young for rehab I guess.
Reply:Very likely it's thrush, very common. It's easily treated. If you breastfeed, you need to be treated as well or you will keep infecting each other. I think they use Diflucan.
Reply:most likely it is thrush. I would make a doctors appointment and see what they think the cause could be.
Reply:i would give your Dr a call and just ask what all could make that happen, I mean do waht you can to figure it out, and quick, I konw my daughters breath smells funky but never like beer.
Reply:You need to investigate which adults are around the daycare center in the daytime while your baby is there.

Chances are, the daycare provider has a foolish hubby or bf who thinks its funny to share his beer with babies.
Reply:When my daughter was an infant her breathe smelled like fish which was called by her milk. But if I was you make sure they is not giving your baby beer. It could be caused by what the baby eat or drink.

Why are babies's breath flowers called babies' breath?

in english if a word ends with s and you need to put ( 's ) after it, we need to put it like this.

for example: chairs's is wrong chairs' is right

similarly socks' cross' etc

Why are babies's breath flowers called babies' breath?
Talk about DUMB!!!??

How do baby's breath while they are in the womb?

They absorb oxygen through the shared umbilical cord blood.

***edit*** on the fascinating but sad side, a baby can actually be born alive, not ever take a real breath of air and have enough oxygen in it's blood to maintain a heartbeat for close to an hour, before officially passing away.

How do baby's breath while they are in the womb?
they don't breath air like they do outside the womb, they get the benefits of oxygen from you through the placenta. however they practice the motion of using their lungs but all they inhale is amniotic fluid. Once a baby has gone through the transition of birth they can't go back to breathing water.
Reply:babies get oxygen through blood while in the womb. they do not actually take a breath until after birth. their is an opening in the heart that bypasses a babies lungs and it closes off after birth. this opening bypasses the lungs while the baby is in the womb
Reply:they dont, they receive oxygenated blood thru the umbilical cord from you.
Reply:dude i thought they were like fish and had gills
Reply:Through the tube in their stomach.

Reply:A small white flower which, grows in bunches or, very small, delicate respiration.
Reply:Small white flower. The whie flowers you get with roses.
Reply:Gypsophila (Baby's-breath; Gypsophila [1] ) is a genus of about 100 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native to Europe, Asia and north Africa. Many species are found on calcium-rich soils, including gypsum, whence the name of the genus. Some species are also sometimes called "baby's breath" or simply, "Gyp", among the floral industry. Its botanical name means "lover of chalk", which is accurate in describing the type of soil in which this plant grows.

They are herbaceous annual and perennial plants growing to 5-120 cm tall. The leaves are opposite, linear to narrow triangular, often falcate (sickle-shaped), 1-7 cm long and 2-8 mm broad. The flowers are produced in large inflorescences, which may be either dense or open and lax; each flower is small, 3-10 mm diameter, with five white or pink petals.
Reply:It's a type of flower. Typically seen with roses and some wedding arrangements. It doens't smell very good.
Reply:Also known as Baby’s Breath, this is one of the most widely used of all the fillers, airy, soft beige color, soft and pliable, makes mini gyp a perfect filler for wreaths and arrangements. 4 oz. bunch. For decoration Only, not Food Grade. Well that was the explanation I got off the web, all I can add is that it also comes in white. Now you can say that Baby's Breath is a sweet aroma to a mother and father.

Prefers full sun in well-drained soils. Baby's Breath can not tolerate an acid soil. Sow in early spring, seedlings are not winter hardy. Baby's Breath provides many strategic applications within the garden.

Do Baby's Breath flowers really smell like a baby's breath?
Not really, but they are small and very cuddly and look nice.
Reply:No, Baby's breath is a term used to refer to annual flowers in the genus Gypsophila, all of which are characterized by highly branched stems and small white to pink flowers.

=D
Reply:NNNNNNnnooo; but after smelling them you will certainly sneaze like a baby.

Reply:No. They are the size of baby buds on regular plants at their full size.
Reply:no they don't smell like a baby's breath.it's because the flowers are so tiny.

Why do people think that a cat will take away a baby's breath?

Just a myth, cats will smell the formula on a baby's breath and possibly lick, but not gonna suck the life out of your child.

Why do people think that a cat will take away a baby's breath?
cats go to the smell of milk or formula on a baby and lick their faces to get the taste and their fur blocks them from breathing. I personally have never seen this happen but my cousin said she caught her cat doing this, and the cat was on the babys chest too. that little bit of weight on a baby's chest makes it hard to breathe too.
Reply:cats are attracted to babies and to snuggly blankets, they go into the cradle to be with the baby and have a nice sleeping place........ now the cat lies on the baby's chest, and the chest still isnt strong enough to have a weight on it.... its a old tale that they kill babies... in the meantime they actually mean no harm.... they just want love too
Reply:It's an old wives tale.

I'm not gonna bore you by copying and pasting a wiki on it but it pretty much has to do with the cat smothering the baby and possible allergy issues.
Reply:it is the fur that the breath is taken away. i have had cats all around my kids and it has never happened. it came from the old folks back in the olden days. cats always get a bad rap
Reply:They smell milk/formula on the baby and get in the babies crib. They sleep on the babies chest or cover the babies face.

Cats are evil
Reply:They curl up on the babies face for warmth %26amp; over the warm breath. It might not be true but it sounds resonable.
Reply:i think its cuz kitties like to curl up and keep warm so they get into cribs and such..and people are morons when they made up that story...
Reply:Some people will believe anything.
Reply:The smell of milk attracts them to the baby.
Reply:Because I have seen the movie...Love, honey
Reply:because they have been caught in the cradle many, many times
Reply:cats are known for eating babies souls

How much to charge as a Nanny?

Why does my 1 year old baby`s breath smells bad?is this normal?

i think it is normal. my mother used to let us teeth on a warm wet wash cloth as small children during bath time and i think this cleaned out our mouths. after he eats try to get him to drink a little water to wash away the food this is staying in there and causing the small. if it is still very foul ask his doc, they've heard it all before

Why does my 1 year old baby`s breath smells bad?is this normal?
It could be a throat or mouth infection however I would say teeth is a cause of bad breath but a visit to your doc should clarify if there is a problem or not.
Reply:Maybe your baby has TMAU (Trimethylaminuria). This is a disease that causes bad breath and body odor. If your child's bad breath persists, I would think about getting him/her tested for TMAU.

Check the link below for more information on this disorder.
Reply:Sometimes this can be a sign of an infection. If it smells horrible, to the point where it unbearable to smell ... I would take him/her to the doctor just to make sure they don't have an infection. Baby's can often times get an infection in their mouth called Thrush, which is treatable by an antibiotic. I would also check into getting some teeth and gum cleaner. Gerber makes some there is tasty for the kids, and it helps their teeth and gums stay clean :)

What does the term 'baby's breath' mean?

You mean as in when someone might say "as fine as baby's breath?"

Lacy, delicate, whispy, soft, fresh, fine... wow, until you mention it haha, well I never realized just how much it means to me. And though it appears so fragile, it grows wild, resilient. Kinda like nefesh. Kai or angel speak. Mmmm, Yes... babies breath be like a very fine and intricate network of curious nature similar to a cape of silken web embellished with hundreds of tiny pearls that I imagine any well dressed rose or any bouquet might appear or feel naked without.

Well that's what I might say if I were a pansy or a florist, but I'm not so I guess I would have to tell you I think it's that funny smell after I burp one of my little nefeshkies and then they spit up all this yucky stuff all over you and then everybody runs and says ewwwwwwwww!

I'm trying to find info on data on how to grow a plant (baby's breath) for my daughters science project! HELP!

Baby's Breath (Gypsophila elegans) is very easy to grow and does not take a lot of care given the right conditions.

First make sure to get the annual variety (the species I listed above is the annual species and the one talked about in my second source). They will need full sun (an extra light source will be necessary this time of year), a warm environment, and care not to over-water them. After planting them far enough apart to allow for growth (about 6-8 inches indoors) just make sure to water only when the soil is drying out and they will grow quickly.

Good luck on the science experiment. Some of my students have used Baby's Breath before and found it very easy to grow indoors.

My baby's breath stinks from his vitamin.... ??

The pediatrician prescribed a liquid vitamin for my 12 month old son. His breath stinks all day from this vitamin! Has anyone had this problem? Can't I feed him Flinstone chewables?

My baby's breath stinks from his vitamin.... ??
Your child is to young for the chewables....I believe they have to be 4 yrs old for the flinstone's.

I'm assuming you mix the vitamins with a drink for your child..if not try that. I haven't noticed this problem with my kids and I mix their vitamins with their milk or juice.

Newborn baby's breath?

what is the best way to care for my newborn son's stinky breath! he is 3 wks today, smells like sour milk, is this normal?

Newborn baby's breath?
Your son could be getting some reflux or possibly spitting up. It is very normal. If your baby cries when he spits up or cries when you burp him could be a sign of severe reflux in which case you will want to talk with the ped. about it. Do not give a newborn water without consent from doctor. I've grown used to the spit up smell (still don't enjoy it but can live with it). Good luck!
Reply:girl please. Enjoy the baby breathe while u can. I think it personally smells yummy. The onlly problem i have with my daughter is the milk film it leaves in her mouth. But I've noticed it's comin off by it self. No worries. Your baby is fine. Im sure it doesn't even smell sour either
Reply:Sure it's normal. All they take in is milk and some is bound to come back up. I doubt there is really anything you can do for it.
Reply:my doc told me to give about an ounce of water in a bottle b4 she goes to bed. But I just lived with it. When i smell that, she usually will spit up soon
Reply:You could lightly brush out the inside of his mouth %26amp; gums with a clean, wet washcloth.
Reply:i think thts probably normal as all he is drinking is milk....and thn spits it up....

My baby's breath stinks?

shes two months old and her breath smells like a combination of cheese and tuna. anything i can do to fix this?

My baby's breath stinks?
DO NOT USE HONEY! Children less than one year old are not supposed to have honey because it can cause botulism. I would clean her mouth with a soft cloth also. I was also told that some babies get stinky breath when they have to poop.
Reply:The only other thing I can think of is that sometimes bad breath is a sign of something more. for example, having a mouth thrush or an infection on the tonsils. However in most cases it is simply oral hygiene that can make the difference and help - if it persists after extra cleaning then I would look into the other options with a doctor.
Reply:you can take a damp cloth and was her mouth but that really only works for a bit i used peppermint in a little bit of water it works and doesnt hurt the tummy etc etc hope it helps and good luck PS DONT GIVE YOUR BABY HONEY! here is a good reason why read what the doc has to say http://www.webmd.com/content/article/41/...
Reply:Take a clean damp rag and softly rub down her tongue, gums and top of her mouth. My daughter loves when I do it to her, and it helps get them used to cleaning their gums so when it comes time for a toothbrush they will be used to it. Anyways it helps with my daughters breath very well.
Reply:That's totally normal for a baby breath to smell funny. It's from the nutrients and vitiamins in the milk that they drink. All you have to do it take one of her towels and run some warm water on it and gently wipe her tongue.
Reply:It could be thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mouth. If your baby has a white or white spots on the tongue, then get her in to the doctor.
Reply:take a little bit of honey dissolve in water and take a burping cloth and with this solution clean the tongue but only a little bit of honey.

but you can ask the doctor just in case is something else.

Why do they call it Baby's Breath?

I have to do research on this for a class, but I can't find the answer.

I've tried Wikipedia, Ask.com and Google with no results.

I even checked the encyclopedia, dictionary and thesaurus!

Please Help!

Why do they call it Baby's Breath?
Baby's breath is the name of a flower (or types of flower). All flowers have a meaning and baby's breath means innocence, because a baby's breathe is said to be the purest breath of all. The flowers are so called because of their light baby-like colours. In days of yore, the type of flower you were given had a meaning, such as red rose for love and devotion. Even today we associate red roses with romance.

Can a cat take away a baby's breath?

Only the black ones (cats that is).

Can a cat take away a baby's breath?
no but if it does sit on the baby's face. the cat just smells milk on their breath!
Reply:No, they can't (EVEN the black ones. :| Color doesn't mean anything).

They can only "take a baby's breath" away if they suffocate the baby by accident, particularly if the cat hops into the crib and tries to cuddle with the sleeping baby, which is simply something nice warm and soft to them.
Reply:if it sits on the baby's face, then YES
Reply:No, this an old myth that should have been done away with in the dark ages.
Reply:Absolutely a superstitious, stupid, moronic suggestion. How would that be possible. A little logic would demonstrate much better thinking than those who perpetuate that kind of stupidity.

Superstitious rubbish.
Reply:Nope. Sounds like superstition to me. The idea that cats suck baby's breath probably came from cats sniffing babies who's just drank milk... and as we know, cats love milk.

Reply:I can not believe that I read this in a book about babies. It is not true, Do you know how many times I woke up with a cat staring into my face, then they touch their nose to mine. I think that is cute. No a cat will not suffocate your baby.

I don't think it is smart to let a cat into a crib unless there is an adult watching , because a cat can freak out on anything moving like a babies legs. Good luck with the baby and the kitty.
Reply:NO they don't. Their mouths aren't meant for suction.

What can happen is the cat can lay against the baby and accidentally block the nose and mouth and if the baby isn't strong enough to pull away or push at the cat, then there can be a big problem.

However most cats don't want to be too close to baby hands, they pull fur and don't feel good.
Reply:In the past, cot death (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) was not known as such. (In developed countries, infant mortality was much higher than today.) The presence of a cat in or near the crib is not evidence of suffocation - it is circumstantial. In tragic cases of Sudden Infant Death, we want to blame someone or something. A cat is a convenient scapegoat. There may have been no post mortem, but the tale of the "killer" cat gets passed down through the generations and is accepted as fact despite a lack of real evidence.

There are far more documented stories where cats have saved babies or their owners, but people forget about those.

http://www.parentdish.com/2008/01/24/cat...
Reply:Thats an old wives tale. A cat will get in the babys face because it smells the formula. The cat will also lick the baby in the mouth-yuck. I had to get rid of a cat for that reason. My cat would try to knock the bottle from my baby. My cat became aggressive with my baby.
Reply:That is a wives tale, and it stems from cats wanting to sleep in warm places. What is warmer than a crib or bassinette? With a sleeping, helpless, weak baby? The breathing of the baby is warm and the cat can cuddle with the baby, only the baby can't turn or get away from the cat... so what do cats do when they are relaxed and happy? they cuddle closer. If you have a cat at home, or know a very friendly cat you will know when you lay on your back, cats like to sleep on your chest and near your face. Because its warm.

So at some time, some where, a cat did this, and the baby couldnt get away from the cat and either the cat laid on the baby stiffling the breathing or the baby chokes on the cats fur because the cat is too close. So not the cat doesnt really take away the breath but they can be dangerous to a sleeping baby only cause they want to cuddle to much for comfort.
Reply:Although it is not common there have been reports of a cat 'taking away' a baby's breath. This has nothing to do with the cat magically or in any way supernaturally stealing the breath from a baby. It has to do with a cat laying on a baby's chest, like it would do an adult human, to sleep or lick the baby's mouth. The cat is attracted by the scent of milk or formula on the baby's face and lays on them. The cat is heavy and essentially squeezes the baby's lungs, preventing the baby from taking a full breath.

These incidents are rare and do not occur often.
Reply:No.

That is an old wives tale.

And yes, not even black cats can do that.

The only things that take babies breath away is disease of some kind or a human (not a cat) killing them.

It's not cats we have to worry about--it's people.

Is this really baby's breath? what is its scientific name?
No it isn't baby's breath. It looks to be some kind of Aster, Kalimeris or Boltonia. All are related and are in the Asteraceae family.

There are so many varieties in this grouping of plants. I would be really guessing....but I would look at things like Aster 'Monte Casino', Kalimeris pinnatifida and Boltonia asteroides for starters.

Reply:That is not baby's Breath. Baby's Breath are small little white flowers in bunches and you'll see them often used as fillers in flower arrangements that you receive from a florist. The flower in your photo looks quite a bit like a daisy that I once had. But I also had an Aster that was quite similar only a different color. Judging by the stems I would say Aster. There are many varieties of both Daisy and Asters.
Reply:Yes, it is. The scientific name is Gypsophila.
Reply:Could be Halitosis
Reply:Not Baby's Breath. Floral Baby's Breath is Gypsophila paniculata, and used as filler in many floral arrangements. Seen usually with rose buds in vase. Usual form is tiny, 1/8" flowers clustered on airy stems. Very airy-looking plant.

Plant pictured, as suggested by others, could be some variety of Aster, Erigeron, Helianthus, Daisy (Compositae family)

Baby's breath only centerpieces?

I know I've seen beautiful, simple centerpieces that were babies breath only but I'm not having any luck finding photos of this.

I've searched google, the knot and the wedding channel.

Can any of you help me find a few pictures of centerpieces made exclusively of baby's breath? Thanks a bunch!

Baby's breath only centerpieces?
There are a couple of good pictures here: http://boards.weddingchannel.com/message...

Yahoo! Answers would not let me post direct links to the applicable photos, but there are 2 that are strictly baby's breath!
Reply:One idea if you are not using a color vase or bowl for these flowers is to use regular glass and line the inside with a colored tissue paper so you cannot see the stems of the baby's breath. You can get some shiny paper to give that extra sparkle.

You could also get a wide ribbon in a matching color and tie around each bowl to either make a bow or to just give it a french knot.

Another thought if you want to give it more dazzle is to string pearl/gold/or even the more expensive "swartz" beads on copper wire and fasten it under the bow. By using the copper wire, you can bend it to make different shapes. You can get some pretty small gauge wire that you can slip through the tinest beads. This same idea would work in place of the bow, but make a necklace for the vase. You can use that elastic clear bead band the kids use to make friendship bracelets and then it will fit snug against the glass.
Reply:Its called gypsy a big headed baby's breath. Also another very simple very delicate flower is Queen Anne's Lace. Its really pretty in a bouquet.
Reply:Best bet, go toa florist and ask if they have ideas on the centerpice. See if they can out together a few different styles for you to choose from.

My baby's breath sometimes smells like maple syrup. Has anyone else ever noticed this on a baby?

He is doing fine developmentally, but I worry about diabetes or other diseases. He's going to the Dr. on Monday so we'll mention it then, but I am just curious if anyone else has experienced this. It is very distinctly maple-syrupy, not just sweet

My baby's breath sometimes smells like maple syrup. Has anyone else ever noticed this on a baby?
Are you taking fenugreek?

I just recently started taking fenugreek to boost my milk production. I started smelling like maple syrup. So did my baby... And according to kellymom.com it's supposed to be normal.
Reply:I NOTICED THE SAME THING. ARE YOU BREASTFEEDING? SOMETIMES HIS CLOTHES EVEN SMELL LIKE IT. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY.
Reply:You don't happen to be taking fenugreek for boosting your milk supply do you? I took it for awhile and it made me and my son smell like maple syrup.
Reply:It's probably the formula you are feeding him, it's not uncommon. However if his urine ever smells like maple syrup you need to get him to see a doctor right away.

Maple Syrup Urine Disease:

Characterized in an infant by the presence of sweet-smelling urine, with an odor similar to that of maple syrup, infants with this disease seem healthy at birth but if left untreated suffer severe neurological damage, and eventually die.

Wikipedia has more about it. Don't mean to scare you but it is something to be aware of. Make sure it's just her breath that smells that way!
Reply:I think you are right to be concerned, I would be. An old wives tale about diabetes in very young children is to kiss the very back of their neck and then lick your lips. If its sweet opposed to salty you may have a problem. I don't know if there is any validity to this.

I think you are correct to have a doctor check it out. Trust your intuition, mothers know their children better than anyone, Better safe and wrong than right and sorry!
Reply:oh that's normal= my son's is like that all the time- i guess it's the way my breastmilk smells since his mouth is always milk stained
Reply:It's normal! It depends though. If you're breastfeeding, what YOU ate could cause that.

Baby's Breath Bush?

My Grandma has this beautiful full bush that I believe is baby's breath and is in full bloom right now. Can I start some new plants with clippings or will I have to dig up some of it by the roots?

Baby's Breath Bush?
you should be able to start some new plants from clippings. Ask for rooting hormone from your local garden center. wet the ends of the clippings and stick in the rooting hormone and then plant in a pot filled with good draining potting soil. if you do this now, you'll probably have a good plant to stick in the ground in the fall. good luck.
Reply:Collect seeds. I've never tried rooting b breath from cuttings, may just do so with my pinks today. Depending on the size of the "mother" plant you may have success dividing the roots, but eek, would be scared of damaging grammas's plant.
Reply:Rooting the terminal cutting is effective but it should be done in the shade propagators, most effective is taking semi ripe roots from the ground and bury it in the sand with mild light and moisture under propagators it will work, and let me know.
Reply:dig it up.let it bloom and them after that cut it down. them it should bloom again.

this is done to encourage blooms since it only blooms once

What's the substance that makes the mouth smells like baby's breath?

Is your question more towards a good smell or a bad smell.

Baby formula can be rank at times (shooo weee). That smell can get in your nose after making baby bottles and it stays there for a while.

Have a great day.....

What's the deal with baby's breath?

Like why is it so special and stuff?

What's the deal with baby's breath?
It's a nice pretty white filler that can go with any color of flower and fill out the arrangement.

By the way, guess where it gets its name? Stinks to high heaven when grown in your garden.
Reply:I don't know that it's so special. It's just something florists have been using a long time, especially with roses.
Reply:Bad breath can be a sign of infection.
Reply:Because it's filler, which means that it fluffs up a floral arrangement and makes it look full without resorting to using a blajillion expensive roses.

Other than that, dunno. I do like the white stuff that creeps along the ground (baby's tears? Something about a baby) but I don't much like baby's breath as a plant.

And I could do without it as filler.

Can Baby's Breath flowers be grown indoors?

Can I plant this flower indoors on a planter? Or does it have to grown on a large area. I've seen pictures and it does spread, but can I just plant a couple seeds? Or what other white flower can I plant indoors???How deep i'm I supposed to put the seeds, how many and how far apart? I tried planting mixed flower seed and they began to grow within 2 days but now theyre just very thin and they are not standing up they dropped on the soil (no flowers yet) Planting is just not my thing!!!

How did the flower Baby's Breath get it's name?

Baby's Breath got it's name from it's smell. It is almost a sweet, putrid smell. Some people love the smell but, as a florist, I can tell you that it get's old quick. It is a very, very distinct smell that is only associated with this flower.

:) Ms. Orchid

How did the flower Baby's Breath get it's name?
"GYPSOPHILA-Baby's Breath is very fond of limestone soils. Its name is derived from "gupsos," "gypsum" and "phileo," "to love."

It is a small and delicate flower--as delicate as a baby's breath.
Reply:Thats only its common name . Many plants can be called by it

Any ideas for yellow flowers or a bush with flowers like Yarrow, Baby's Breath, Queen Anne's Lace, etc. that

grows in Northern Calif. (zone 9B) Everything so far is not a perrenial, is invasive, looks like a week when not blossoming, or something! I've looked through thousands of flowers! Don't you hate it when you have a certain picture in your mind but nothing matches it? Any suggestions?

Any ideas for yellow flowers or a bush with flowers like Yarrow, Baby's Breath, Queen Anne's Lace, etc. that
Yarrow does come in yellow. It is native in the white, A. millifolium.

Kerria japonica. Nice little shrub with puffy yellow flowers early in the year.

Forsitia too.

And calendula. Daisy like. Like the hear and don't need much water.

Marigolds?

Tidy tips (Annual), or Coreopsis (both annual %26amp; perennial spp.) are nice yellow wild daisy types. My lance leaf coreopsis have been blooming for a couple months now.

Have you seen the yellow Echinacea? Purple cone flowers with yellow petals.

And there is a Native "coneflower", Rudbeckia spp. that are very nice. Go up around Monterey and Pt Lobos.

Yellow eyed grass is a great little wildflower. Smal and Iris like.

And there are native Iris, the Pacific Coast Hybrids, in yellows and blues, and more colors.

Wish I could see the picture in your head so I might know what you want.

Maybe a large Sedum? Or Dudleya? Succulents that have yellow flowers on stalks.

Native Violets. Nice yellow flowers on groundcover like plants.
Reply:Forsythias are my husbands favorite, they get really big fast, and are quite lovely.
Reply:Try the Californian sunflowers or golden wild sunflowers. they grow almost round the year periods
Reply:Acacia has a nice yellow flower. It grows profusely all along the highways in Lake County.
Reply:Thryallis is nice and can be trimmed as it can get pretty large. It's often used as a landscaping bush. It grows well in FL. It doesn't blossom year round but, it is nice green and woodsy looking shrub.

What can I do about my baby's breath smelling like sour milk?

I breastfeed my 3 week old. She spits up alot and her breath smells like sour milk. Is there anything I should be doing for her?

What can I do about my baby's breath smelling like sour milk?
If it really bugs you you could wipe her gums with a damp cloth. But that is about it. Personally I wouldn't do anything.

Oh and about spitting up:

My baby spits up - is this a problem?

Spitting up, sometimes called physiological or uncomplicated reflux, is common in babies and is usually (but not always) normal. Most young babies spit up sometimes, since their digestive systems are immature, making it easier for the stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus (the tube connecting mouth to stomach).

Babies often spit up when they get too much milk too fast. This may happen when baby feeds very quickly or aggressively, or when mom’s breasts are overfull. The amount of spitup typically appears to be much more than it really is. If baby is very distractible (pulling off the breast to look around) or fussy at the breast, he may swallow air and spit up more often. Some babies spit up more when they are teething, starting to crawl, or starting solid foods.

A few statistics (for all babies, not just breastfed babies):

Spitting up usually occurs right after baby eats, but it may also occur 1-2 hours after a feeding.

Half of all 0-3 month old babies spit up at least once per day.

Spitting up usually peaks at 2-4 months.

Many babies outgrow spitting up by 7-8 months.

Most babies have stopped spitting up by 12 months.

If your baby is a ‘Happy Spitter’ --gaining weight well, spitting up without discomfort and content most of the time -- spitting up is a laundry %26amp; social problem rather than a medical issue.

Reply:I breastfeed my 2 children, its the smell of the milk, how often do you feed her? She should be feed ABOUT every two hours and sleep for two hours. You may have to tell the doctor and put her on goats milk.
Reply:ok, the baby tooth %26amp; gum cleanser is for 4 mos. %26amp; older, best to do is follow the advice of those who say use clean, damp cloth %26amp; gently wipe the gums %26amp; tongue, it will help some, but save the baby toothpaste for after 4 mos. also, try burping more often during feedings to try %26amp; cut down on spit up, which will also help with some of the sour smell, %26amp; maybe try an angled bottle and/or vented bottle (really worked for my baby) so u can hold her in a more upright position, %26amp; she still gets all her milk but a lot less air. I used the VentAire bottles, %26amp; they worked great, but I know there's a lot of diff brands, so maybe try one... good luck
Reply:There is actually an infant tooth/gum cleaner you can buy; I think Gerber makes it; I know Wal Mart sells it. The "brush" slips over your finger (its made out of all rubber or silicone like material with tiny, soft "bristles"). The gum cleaner is dye free, and contains no flouride, so it's safe to swallow. It's good for all ages of babies. My son loved his when he was younger. He enjoyed the "massage" on his gums. Before they have teeth it's not necessary; but it will help her breath smell better, and is probably a healthier thing to do.
Reply:Try wiping her mouth out with a clean, wet, soft wash cloth after each feeding.
Reply:take one of the baby's wash cloths and wipe the baby's gums and tongue

What is the best way to process fresh baby's breath?

I am not haveing luck processing baby's breath for fresh cut arrangements. Are there any tips to get best results? It just isn't lasting like it should.

What is the best way to process fresh baby's breath?
As taken from Brooklyn Botanic Garden's website:

When to Cut

Early morning is the ideal time to cut fresh flowers. The flowers have had the benefit of cool night air and morning dew. Their stems are filled with water and carbohydrates and so are firm to the touch. As the day warms up, flowers gradually dehydrate. Midday is the least auspicious time to cut, as transpiration rates are at a peak and plants are rapidly losing moisture through their leaves. Flowers become limp; their necks become bent. If cut, they will not recuperate well and their vase life will probably be short.

When harvesting, have a bucket of water on hand to put the flowers in. Don't dillydally; place the cut flowers in the bucket immediately. I like to use a plastic pail rather than a metal one because metal can affect the pH balance of the water.

Different types of flowers must be harvested at appropriate stages in their development. Flowers with multiple buds on each stem should have at least one bud showing color and one bud starting to open before being cut. This is true for spike flowers (salvias, agastaches, delphiniums, Eremurus, gladioli, snapdragons, stocks, larkspurs, and the like) as well as cluster flowers (agapanthus, Alstroemeria, baby's breath, Clarkia, lilacs, phlox, Queen Anne's lace, verbenas, yarrow, and silenes, for example). If gathered too early—while they're still tightly budded—these flowers will not open in a vase of water.

By contrast, flowers that grow on individual stems (such as asters, calendulas, chrysanthemums, dahlias, Datura, gerbera daisies, marigolds, sunflowers, Tithonia, and zinnias) should be cut when fully open.

When selecting foliage, look for firm leaves and stems with strong coloration.

Cutting Tools and Techniques

Always use clean, sharp utensils when cutting flowers. Knives, clippers, or shears can be employed. Never use ordinary household scissors. The gauge on scissors is set for paper or fabric, not for flower stems, which are bulkier. Using scissors will crush their vascular systems and prevent proper water uptake.

vase with white roses

Flower and foliage stems that have been left out of water, even for a short period of time, seal up and inhibit the absorption of water. Air bubbles sometimes enter the stem and prevent a steady flow of water. In order to prevent this from happening, some people cut their flowers under water before transferring from bucket to vase. However, I have found this to be awkward. Custom-cutting the flower stem in open air and immediately placing it in the vase of water is usually fine.

Cut all flowers and foliage about one inch from the bottom of a main stem. Make the slice at an angle of about 45 degrees. Cutting at an angle provides a larger exposed area for the uptake of water. It also enables the stem to stand on a point, allowing water to be in contact with the cut surface. Remove all the lower foliage that would be submerged in water. This will retard bacterial growth, which shortens the vase life of flowers and makes the water smell foul.

Water Temperature

Professional florists and commercial growers always use lukewarm water for their cut flowers. The water temperature should be 100°F to 110°F. (An exception is when you are using bulb flowers, such as hyacinths and tulips, which need cold water.) Warm water molecules move faster than cold water molecules and so can be absorbed by flowers with greater ease. The objective is to get water and nutrients as quickly as possible to the head of the flower.

Preservatives

Using a preservative definitely increases the longevity of cut flowers. To survive, flowers need three ingredients: carbohydrates, biocides, and acidifiers. Carbohydrates are necessary for cell metabolism; biocides combat bacteria and are necessary for maintaining plant health; acidifiers adjust the pH of water to facilitate and increase water uptake.

Homemade Flower Preservative

Home mixes can be as effective as commercial preservatives. This easy-to-make recipe is my favorite.

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon household bleach

2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice

1 quart lukewarm water

Under normal circumstances, flowers get what they need from the plant. When severed from the plant, however, flowers are deprived of these essential substances. But they are present in ready-made commercial preservatives, like Floral Life. Such solutions contain sugar for nutrition, bleach to keep the water clear of bacteria, and citric acid to gently acidify the water. When using commercial brands, be sure to follow recommended measurements for different container sizes. You can also make your own preservative (see "Homemade Flower Preservative," at right).

One common suggestion is to place an aspirin in the water to keep flowers fresh. It is likely that aspirin's effectiveness is simply the result of the drug's carbohydrate content. Another well-known suggestion is to drop a penny into the water. Apparently, the copper in the penny works like an acidifier, decreasing the pH of the water. Unfortunately, solid copper pennies are no longer being minted.

Preparing the Stems

Garden flowers require some additional preparation after cutting. The type of preparation depends on the type of flower stem: hearty, hollow, soft, woody, or milky.

Hearty Stems

Flowers with hearty (or solid) stems, such as cockscomb, Clarkia, marigolds, statice, and transvaal daisies, need only the diagonal cut to absorb maximum water. They should be left to drink in lukewarm water with preservative for a minimum of one hour before arranging.

Hollow Stems

The stems of hollow-stemmed flowers, such as amaryllis, bells-of-Ireland, dahlias, delphiniums, and hollyhocks, need to be filled with water. Simply turn the flower upside down and pour water into the open cavity of the stalk. To keep the liquid in, you can plug the stem with a small piece of cotton and then place it in the vase. Alternatively, place your thumb over the opening at the bottom of the stem and then put it in the water. The water trapped inside will keep the stem strong and straight. I have noticed that when I fill the hollow stems in this way, the heads of my dahlias stand upright and the small buds on the tip my larkspur actually open!

Soft Stems

Bulb flowers such as hyacinths, iris, and tulips have soft stems and should be cut where the green on the stem starts—just above the white bulb. Place the flowers in cold water. Since most bulbs bloom when the air and ground are still at low temperatures, they do better in a vase of cold water.

Woody Stems

For woody plants such as lilac, dogwood, mock orange, pear, and heather, be sure to split the stems at the ends rather than smash them. This will keep vascular tissues intact and create more surface area to absorb water.

Milky Stems

Flowers such as euphorbia, lobelia, poinsettia, and snow-on-the-mountain secrete latex sap that oozes into the water and clogs the vascular system of other flowers in the container, preventing them from absorbing water. For this reason, the ends of the stems need to be seared before the flowers are placed in the arrangement. There are two ways to accomplish this: Either dip the cut end of the flower in boiling water for 30 seconds or apply a flame from a match or candle to the precut flower stem for about 30 seconds.

Do not use these flowers with a pin holder, because each time the flowers are cut they need to be seared again. Searing is not effective in halting the seepage of secretion from daffodils. Therefore daffodils should not be mixed with other flowers if you want a long-lasting arrangement.
